The United Nations
Over
24,000 people from around the world attended the
3rd World Water Forum, held March 16-23 2003, in
Kyoto, Osaka and Shiga (Japan). Participants discussed
the actions needed
in order to solve the global
water challenges and to meet the goals set forth
at the Millennium Summit of the United Nations
in New York (2000), the International Freshwater
Conference in Bonn (2001) and the World Summit
on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg (2002).
Based upon these discussions, all participating
organisations, from the United Nations to local
NGO's, were encouraged to make specific and tangible
commitments to action.
The
World Water Shimbun offered a glimpse of the
issues that were discussed, the new actions that
were reported, and the commitments and recommendations
that were made during the 3rd World Water Forum.
In addressing the challenge of
balancing increasing human requirements for adequate
water supplies and improved health and sanitation
with food production, transportation, energy and
environmental needs, most countries will require
more effective governance, improved capacity and
adequate financing.
